The Delta State Waste Management Board, in collaboration with the Ethiope East Local Government Council, has carried out a comprehensive maintenance of the Abraka dumpsite.

The exercise, according to officials, is part of a broader strategy by the Board to ensure environmental sanitation best practices, tackle indiscriminate dumping of refuse and safeguard public health across Delta State.

Speaking during the exercise, Chairman of the Delta State Waste Management Board, Hon. Matthew Mofe Edema, represented by the Delta Central member on the Board, Hon. Felix Erhimedafe, commended the Chairman of Ethiope East Local Government Council, Hon. Ogedegbe, for taking the initiative to maintain the dumpsite.

He described the collaboration between the Board and the Council as a practical demonstration of shared responsibility between state and local authorities in promoting environmental cleanliness.

Hon Edema said the intervention was a laudable and admirable step that would not only improve sanitation in Abraka, but also serve as a model for other Councils to emulate, pointing out that regular maintenance of dumpsites was critical to reducing indiscriminate waste disposal, protecting the environment, and preventing health hazards.

The Board Chairman called on residents of the state to abide by the extant rules and regulations on waste disposal, especially with respect to not littering the streets with garbage and registering with government recognized Waste Managers also known as Private Sector Participants (PSPs), noting that the success of waste management efforts depended largely on the cooperation of the public.

He assured that the Waste Management Board, under his watch, will continue to work closely with Local Government Councils to strengthen waste evacuation, improve dumpsite management, and promote community sensitization campaigns on environmental best practices.

Residents of Abraka, who witnessed the exercise, expressed appreciation to both the Board and the Ethiope East Council for what they described as a timely intervention, especially as indiscriminate waste dumping had been a source of concern in recent months.

The maintenance exercise is one of several steps being taken by the Delta State Government to achieve a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable environment for all.
