The Seventh Assembly of the Delta State House of Assembly has been inaugurated with the member representing Okpe Constituency and immediate past Speaker of the Sixth Assembly, Honourable Sheriff Oborevwori reelected as Speaker of the House.

Honourable Oborevwori was nominated by the member representing the Isoko North Constituency, Honourable Tim Owhefere, seconded by the member representing Ika South, Honourable Festus Okoh.

There was no other nomination for the office of Speaker and Honourable Sheriff Oborevwori was there after affirmed in a unanimous vote by members

The election of the Speaker of the Seventh Assembly was sequel to the proclamation of the House by the State Governor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.

Honourable Oborevwori, who is a second timer, was first elected Speaker of the sixth Assembly on May 11, 2019 following the impeachment of Honourable Monday Igbuya.

Elected as Deputy Speaker is the member representing the Ukwuani Constituency, Honourable Ochor Christopher Ochor.

He was nominated by the member representing the Ika North East Constituency, Honourable Emeka Elekeokwuri, seconded by the member representing the Ughelli South constituency, Honourable Reuben Izeze.

There was also no other nomination for the office of Deputy Speaker and Honourable Ochor Christopher Ochor was affirmed in a unanimous vote by members.

Earlier, while proclaming the commencement of the Seventh Assembly the State Governor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa in a latter read by the Clerk of the House, said the proclamation was in line with section 103 sub section 3 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, adding that it was in exercise of the powers conferred on him by the constitution to enable the House hold its first session.

The Clerk of the House, Barrister Lyna Aliya-Ocholor, had earlier congratulated members elect on their electoral victories saying they should apply themselves to the art of lawmaking and oversight functions.

She thereafter gave a roll call of the twenty nine member of the House with the Peoples Democratic Party PDP in majority with twenty six members, while the All Progressives Congress APC is in minority with three members.

The House later observed a fifteen minute recess to enable the Speaker and Deputy Speaker to appear in their ceremonial robes, after which the Speaker administered the oath of allegiance and membership on members elect.

Addressing the House the Speaker, Honourable Sheriff Oborevwori, thanked members for electing him to pilot the affairs of the Seventh Assembly, stressing that he was aware of the challenges that come with the responsibilities of the office of the speaker.

He said members must strive to make the seventh Assembly the envy of other state legislatures in the country and should sustain the reputation of the House as the most vibrant in the country.

Honourable Oborevwori promised that the legislature would discharge its social contract with the people and thanked Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for his support for the legislature and the other arm of government.

Meanwhile,the House has adopted a motion informing the Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, that the House is fully constituted to receive any message from him.

The motion was moved by the member representing the Bomadi Constituency Honourable Oboro Preyor, seconded by the member representing Aniocha North Honourable Emeka Nwaobi.

The inauguration of the seventh Assembly was attended by the Wife of the Deputy Governor, Dr Ebierin Otuaro, some former Speakers and Deputy Speakers, some former members of the House, a representative of the State Chief Judge, the President of the Customary Court of Appeal, Justice Stella Ogene, the State PDP Chairman, Olorogun Kingsley Esiso, some traditional rulers, spouses of members among others.
