Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has commended the Chairman of Oshimili South Local Government, Hon. Dr. Obi Kelvin Ezenyili; for showing competence and leadership in the administration of the Council.
He gave the commendation on Tuesday in Asaba during an empowerment programme organised by the Local Government.
The Governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme FCA, Ph.D; affirmed his administration’s commitment to a people-centered government, declaring that it required a shared responsibility between the leadership and the people to achieve the vision of a prosperous Delta State.
Oborevwori emphasized that sustainable development would only be possible in an atmosphere of peace and harmony, stressing the need for the citizenry to collaborate with government to maintain peace and security.
He noted that the Oshimili South Council Chairman had remained foresighted and consistent with aligning with the state’s M.O.R.E Agenda, having kept faith in the empowerment programme, which had impacted positively on many, especially the women and youths in the Council Area.
The Governor noted that the empowerment programme served as a direct catalyst for grassroots development, bringing the dividends of democracy to every nook and cranny of Oshimili South and the state at large.
”As we approach the end of the year, there is no better way to celebrate the spirit of the season than by lifting our people up and providing them with the tools they need to build a sustainable future.
”Today’s exercise is a practical extension of our administration’s MORE Agenda. Empowerment is not just about the items or the capital distributed today; it is about economic resilience, poverty alleviation, and human capital development.
“To the beneficiaries, view this as a seed; bearing in mind that in a challenging economic climate, the difference between success and failure is often the discipline to manage small beginnings”.
Earlier, the Council Chairman, Hon. Dr. Obi Kelvin Ezenyili; stated that his administration had sustained the empowerment programme as a commitment to improving the welfare and well-being of the people, adding that it was also targeted at enabling those who had acquired skills to set up and promote small-scale businesses.
Dr. Ezenyili commended Governor Sheriff Obborevwori for providing the template for him to align with the M.O.R.E Agenda, pointing out that the Council had in the past one year rendered financial assistance to the people to the tune of over ₦260 million.
According to him, this year’s programme, which saw 1000 beneficiaries receiving ₦100,000 each, was an improvement over that of last year, explaining that the selection of the beneficiaries was thorough and painstaking to ensure that persons who benefited from the programme in the past were not listed.
He urged the beneficiaries not to take the opportunity given to them for granted, insisting that they should put the funds to good use so as to start or grow their small-scale businesses and be able to provide job opportunities for others.
The youthful Council Chairman announced the donation of 40 bags of rice to each of the eleven wards in the area, in the spirit of the festive season.
