Delta State Government has said it is reviewing the proposal for the involvement of the Government College, Ughelli, Old Boys’ Association (GCUOBA) in the running of their alma mater.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori disclosed this on Saturday at the Annual National Dinner of the 80-year old College.

The Governor, who was represented by the Chief of Staff, Government House, Hon Prince Johnson Erijo, said he was encouraged by the proposal, pointing out that the feasibility study conducted by Price Waterhouse & Co, and the presentation made to government last year, reflected the seriousness and vision of the Association.

He said his administration was carefully studying the proposal and was open to constructive dialogue on the matter to ensure it succeeded for the benefit of the students, the school and the state.

Governor Oborevwori emphasized that education remained at the heart of his administration’s M.O.R.E agenda, revealing that government had invested heavily in infrastructure and reforms to raise standards across all levels.

The Governor, however, remarked that it was impracticable for government alone to meet the challenges of providing education, and called on old students, the private sector and civil society to intervene through classroom rehabilitation, provision of books, sports facilities, scholarships and mentorship.

“Together, we can build a future that honours the past and secured tomorrow. Permit me to congratulate you on the success of the College’s 80th anniversary and the launch of your legacy project – a 1000 seater auditorium. I implore all who pledged support to redeem their commitment. Rest assured, Delta State Government stands ready to partner with you on initiatives that transform learning environment for our young people.

“Government College, Ughelli, is more than a school, it is a legacy of excellence. As we celebrate tonight, let us reaffirm our resolve to restore the school to its rightful place as a citadel of learning, discipline and character. My administration is committed to walking this path with you”, Oborevwori said.

In a welcome address, the President General of GCUOBA, worldwide, Olorogun Albert Akpomudje, SAN, said their major ongoing project was the partnership being sought with the Delta State Government for the running of the school by the Association.

Akpomudje disclosed that a consultant had been engaged to produce a feasibility study on the proposal, adding that the report on the study had been presented to the state government, awaiting consideration.

He appealed to the Oborevwori administration to give approval to the request, assuring that the glory of restoring the school to its glorious past would, in the end, go to government, while the pride would be that of the Association.

Earlier in his remarks, the Host President, GCUOBA Asaba branch, Engr. Gabriel Fuludu; noted that the branch had been privileged to host the Association on three occasions over the past seven years, expressing the hope that the Annual National Dinner would rekindle members’ bond of brotherhood, renew their sense of duty and inspire them to greater heights in upholding the proud legacy of their alma mater.

The event, which was chaired by Dr. Bolanle Olawale Babalakin, featured a keynote address on the theme: “Alumni as Catalysts of an AI-Driven Future”, by Dr. Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji, presentation of awards, fund raising amongst others.
