Local Government Councils in Delta State have been urged to collaborate with the state authorities to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment.

The Executive Chairman of the Delta State Waste Management Board, Hon Matthew Mofe Edema, made the call when he led the Board members and management of the Agency on a visit to the Secretariat of the Ughelli North Local Government Council.

Hon Edema noted that environmental sanitation was primarily the responsibility of the Local Government Councils, but not without the support of the Board in terms of control of the activities of Waste Managers, also known as Private Sector Participants (PSPs).

He said the Board would continue to establish and maintain dumpsites across the state to ease the operations of the PSPs, without whose services the environment would be taken over by waste.

The Board Chairman commended the Environment Department of Ughelli North Council for the efforts to keep the area clean, including the pushing of the dumpsite, and promised that a more spacious site would be acquired in the area in due course.

Hon Edema maintained that the Board would remain committed to adding value to the MORE agenda of the Oborevwori administration by driving its mandate of effective waste management and ensuring compliance with global best waste disposal practices.

Responding, the Ughelli North Local Government Chairman, Hon Jaro Egbo, thanked the Board’s delegation for the visit, which he noted would help to build a relationship that would enhance environmental sanitation in the area.

Hon Egbo decried the poor sanitary habits of some residents of the area, especially in the markets, and agreed to focus on regularly cleaning the expressway, in order not to portray the area in bad light.

The member representing Delta Central, Hon Felix Erhimedafe; member representing Delta North, Cosmas Igbenije; member representing Delta South Chief Mrs Ethe Odunwa; Director Admin, Mr Okonye Samuel, Director of Operations, Mr Michael Esegba; amongst others, were on the Chairman’s entourage.
