It has been asserted that engaging young people in activities that spark curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking is essential to equipping them with the skills to solve real-world problems and explore innovative solutions.
Also access to resources and practical opportunities remain a challenge, initiatives that blend science, creativity, and experimentation provide students with the space to imagine, discover, and realize their potential in any field they choose.
The assertions were made at the grand finale of Igniting Minds Through Science (IMS) Exhibition of Vcare for Development Foundation (VCDF), committed to creating lasting social, economic, and environmental impact in line with national and global sustainable development goals.
The initiative, which marked the launch of the Foundation’s first annual Science Project in Delta State, was supported by Sterling Oil Exploration & Energy Production Co. Ltd. (SEEPCO).
With the theme, “Future Frontiers: STEM Innovations for Nation Building”, the competition took place recently at Utagba-Ogbe Grammar School, Kwale, bringing together 11 secondary schools from Ndokwa East and Ndokwa West Local Government Areas.
VCDF held an orientation in July 2025 for science teachers and principals from 34 public secondary schools across the two local government areas.
The teachers extended the training to their students, reaching approximately 300 science learners. 11 schools submitted proposals and received funds for their project development.
The exhibition was an innovative first-of-its-kind initiative, complementing the State Government’s MORE Agenda.
In her remarks on the occasion, the Commissioner for Basic Education, represented by the Director of Science Education in the Ministry of Secondary Education, Mrs. Hope Igumbor, described the initiative as thoughtful and commended the Foundation for its steadfast commitment to educational development.
Speaking on behalf of the first-place winning team from Utagba-Ogbe Technical College, a student shared her appreciation thus: “This competition provided a platform to showcase my abilities and gain meaningful experience. It has inspired me to think bigger and dream higher”.
Significant and laudable projects that received recognition as first, second and third prize winners were – Smart Extension Box by Utagba-Ogbe Technical College; Flood Detection System by Abbi Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School, and Paper Ceiling by Girls’ Secondary School, Kwale.
The event concluded with the presentation of certificates and consolation prizes to all participants and schools, recognizing every school as winners, alongside cultural dance performances that celebrated science, creativity, and culture.
The IMS programme aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 on quality education and Goal 9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure.
VCDF, powered by SEEPCO, will continue to empower young minds, strengthen communities, and foster innovation across Delta State and beyond.
