Nigerien nationals living in Asaba have been told to obey the laws of Nigeria and respect the customs and traditions of their host community.

The Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Asagba Prof Epiphany Azinge, SAN, OON; gave the charge when a delegation of Nigeriens resident in Asaba paid him a courtesy visit.

Asagba Prof Azinge advised the Nigeriens to ensure that their immigration requirements were up to date, stressing the need for them to update their expatriate quota and permit to avoid confrontation with the law enforcement agencies.

He noted that Asaba had become a booming cosmopolitan city now accommodating not just Nigerians, but even other nationalities and international entities, including Niger Republic.

This, he said, showed how diversified and internationalized the Asaba population had become by virtue of the fact that citizens of other nationalities now domiciled in Asaba, and cohabiting peacefully and working in harmony with the people.

“I appreciate your leader saying that you have been here for up to 10 years with obedience to the laws of the land, and more importantly to us you respect the customs and traditions of our people. So, if that be the case, we wish you well, we don’t have any issue with you.

“Asaba is a land for all. For many generations we have learned to live peacefully with people from all climes and of all shades of opinion, and I’m happy that some of you are having your endeavors and undertakings at the Ogbeogonogo market, which means you are in the midst and thick of Asaba tradition and people.

“I also know that people from your place are into some other forms of undertaking, such as building construction, welding, POP, amongst others. There are so many things that you have creatively endowed yourselves with and you come to Nigeria to showcase and exhibit your skills, and in the process make a living and make some money.

“So, I want to congratulate you and wish you well. One thing that is very uppermost in our mind is the peace of our land and I know you should have that at the back of your mind. As some of your other indigenes and nationals come into Asaba either to live or meet with you, find time to educate them that Asaba is a peaceful environment and for anyone to live peacefully with us the person must also be peaceful”, the proactive traditional ruler maintained.

Speaking earlier, the leader of the celebration and Vice Chairman of the Association of Nigerien Nationals Living in Asaba, Zakary Yau Amadu; congratulated Asagba Prof Azinge on his ascension to the throne, disclosing that the association had existed for up to 10 years.

Amadu said Asaba had been peaceful and beneficial to them, pointing out that they had remained and would continue to be law abiding and respectful to the customs and traditions of the land.
