Elders of Aniocha/Oshimili have been urged to be proactive about issues affecting the people of the region.

The Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Asagba Prof Epiphany Azinge, SAN, OON, made the call when a delegation of Izu Ikei Aniocha/Oshimili, otherwise known as Aniocha/Oshimili Elders Association, paid him a courtesy visit.

Asagba Prof Azinge noted that the group was more reactionary than anticipatory, stressing that they must not wait for things to happen before taking action.

The monarch said the elders should be able to shape opinions and chart courses for the greater good of the people of Aniocha/ Oshimili, insisting that they must ensure that the people were not left out of the scheme of things.

His Royal Majesty emphasized that they should speak up on the challenges of the region and draw the attention of the relevant authorities to them for possible solutions, even if their efforts failed to yield the desired results.

The Asagba reminded the elders that peace and security were paramount for development to thrive in Aniocha/Oshimili, informing them that traditional rulers in the region had resolved to collaborate with one another on issues of common interest.

He commended them for coming together to be able to speak with one voice and inculcate in the younger generation the culture of harkening to the words of wisdom.

Earlier, the Vice Chairman of the Association, Sir Fidelis Uti, said the group was formed to play the role of similar organizations in other Federal Constituencies, adding that the visit was to familiarize with and pay respect to the Asagba.

Sir Uti, a nonagenarian, said the Association was also in place for the well-being of all Aniocha/Oshimili people, and had always intervened in issues affecting any community in the region.

He disclosed that membership of the group, which would be formally launched in September, was open to persons aged 60 years and above and urged those eligible to join.
