Delta State Commissioner for Lands and Surveys, Barr (Mrs) Kate Onianwa, has called for more roles for women in the polity if the country must attain the desired level of development.

Barr Onianwa, who was speaking on the 61st anniversary of Nigeria as an independent nation, said women were known to be good managers of resources and would be prudent, accountable and equitable if given the opportunity to hold key positions in government.

She regretted the marginalization of Nigerian women in the past, saying it contributed to the numerous challenges plaguing the nation today due to the decline in moral values and overbearing influence of the men folk.

The Commissioner called for gender equality as a way to addressing injustice in the system, stressing that peace and unity could only be achieved in a situation where sex was deemphasized in the choice of the right persons to make things work.

Barr Onianwa congratulated Nigerians, particularly Deltans, on the auspicious occasion of the nation’s independence anniversary, pointing out that the fact that Nigeria still remained one, irrespective of the numerous threats to the unity of the country, was worth celebrating.

She commended Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for his gender friendly disposition which had seen to the appointment of many women to political offices and urged women in the state to be more active in politics to enable them benefit more from the system.
