The Organised Labour in Delta State has urged Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to intervene in the PAYE tax increment which has made nonsense of the take home pay of workers in the state.

In a letter dated 2nd February, 2026, signed by the Secretary, NLC, Delta State Council, Comrade Enekhawore Acrobat and Secretary, SPUC, Comrade Okafor Henry; and addressed to the Governor, Organised Labour noted that while workers in the state were basking in the euphoria of the 1st October, 2024 increment in salaries and the attendant benefits following the implementation of the New Minimum Wage, they were suddenly confronted with the adverse effects of the PAYE Tax increment.

The NLC and TUC stated that since the payment of January, 2026 salaries by the state government, there had been mounting tension and agitations among workers in the state, adding that the offices of the leadership of the both Trade Union Centres had been besieged by aggrieved workers, demanding that the Unions take urgent steps to address the situation through progressive engagements.

“With the implementation of the New Tax Regime, most workers take home have returned to negative. Your Excellency, Sir, this development has left workers disoriented, hindering their abilities to carry out their duties effectively.

“Suffice it to say, therefore, that while Organized Labour understands the significant wage bill borne by the state as a result of salary increases, we equally appreciate the contributions of workers through payments of taxes for the overall development of the State.

“However, it is our humble opinion that implementation of the law on the new National Tax Regime should be done with a human face for the sustenance of the general wellbeing of workers.

“In view of the foregoing, we wish to respectfully use this medium to appeal to Your Excellency, the Governor, to kindly use your good office to intervene with a view to ameliorating the challenges being faced by workers due to the full implementation of the new National Tax Law.

“We thank Your Excellency, the Governor, in anticipation of your kind intervention and prompt response to the issues raised herein”, Organised Labour added.

The NLC and TUC, on behalf of the Delta State workforce, felicitated Oborevwori, whom they described as “the working Governor”, for the grace of a new year, 2026; and expressed sincere appreciation to him for prompt payment of workers’ salaries, and for the gigantic projects he had initiated and completed across the state since his assumption of office in 2023.
