In keeping with the promise to ensure that Agbor remains clean at all times, the Delta State Waste Management Board has embarked on routine evacuation of refuse dumps in parts of the metropolis

The exercise, which was supervised by the member representing Delta North on the Board, Hon Cosmas Igbenije, focused on the evacuation of waste dumped on the median strips of Old Lagos/Asaba road, Agbor

Emphasis later shifted to the massive waste dumps after Niugbo street, also on the Old Lagos/Asaba road, where officials of the Board evacuated the piled up garbage into a waiting waste disposal truck.

The Board member, Hon Igbenije; said the exercise was part of a broader initiative to get rid of waste in the area, reiterating the Board’s zero tolerance for indiscriminately dumped waste and illegal dumpsites.

He urged residents of Agbor and indeed other towns and cities in Delta North to adhere to best waste disposal practices, insisting that they should cooperate and collaborate with the Agency to achieve its mandate for the greater good of the environment and promotion of pubic health.

Hon Igbenije cautioned against dumping refuse in the drains, which he noted was a major cause of flooding in Agbor and enjoined the people to procure waste bins for their apartments and business premises, and register with the Private Sector Participants (PSPs) to evacuate their garbage on a regular basis for an agreed token.

He reminded residents of the existence of a Mobile Court for environmental offences, stressing that it was not the wish of the Board that anyone should be convicted for contravening the existing laws, but that the rules and regulations laid down to protect the environment should be obeyed.
