The maiden edition of the 10km Asaba International Road Race took place on Saturday, with local and international athletes participating.

It was flagged off at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, by the Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Prof. Epiphany Azinge, SAN, OON.

Welcoming the participants, including athletes, officials and sponsors, before the flag-off, the Asagba said the event was more than a sporting competition, as it was also a celebration of unity, endurance and the vibrant spirit of Asaba.

The Monarch noted that Asaba had continued to grow as a hub for sports, culture and tourism, pointing out that hosting the international road race reaffirmed Asaba’s commitment to promoting healthy living, fostering community pride and opening the capital city to the world.

Nna Agu said he was honoured to welcome elite runners from different nations, as well as enthusiastic participants from across Nigeria, and commended the organisers, partners and volunteers whose hard work helped to make the event possible.

His Royal Majesty said the dedication of the participants strengthened the Asaba community and showcased its beauty and hospitality.

In an address, the Chairman, Asaba Sports Committee, Wing Commander Peter Iweze (rtd), said the historic event began with a successful 5km fitness walk, which helped to build excitement, strengthen community involvement and set the tone for the competition.

He expressed gratitude to the Asagba whose vision and generosity made the event possible, disclosing that the Monarch not only conceived the idea but also bankrolled the maiden edition, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to promoting youth development, unity and global visibility for Asaba through sports.

The Consultant of the race, Mr Moses Nwanze, said over 4000 local and international athletes participated in the run, conceived by the Asagba to boost sports development in Asaba and launch the community to global visibility.

Two winners in the elite category, Ishmel Sadjo from Plateau State and a Kenyan athlete, Florence Watetu Wachira, won the star prize money of $5,000 each, while two others of Asaba origin, Promise Ogbolu and Ogochukwu Gwam went home with N300,000 each.
