The Delta State Waste Management Board, over the weekend, embarked on a major clean-up exercise around the Koka Junction Flyover, in Asaba, the state capital.

During the exercise, officials of the Agency evacuated heaps of refuse indiscriminately dumped under and around flyover, Ibusa road, and adjoining streets, which had repeatedly been turned to illegal dumpsites by some residents.

The Chairman of the Board and one-time Chairman of Warri South Local Government, Hon. Matthew Mofe Edema, on whose directive the clean-up was carried out, said the intervention was part of a broader statewide initiative to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment.

Hon Edema reiterated that the routine clean-up at strategic locations across the State Capital Territory would be sustained, in line with the proactive measures being adopted by the Board to improve environmental sanitation across the towns and cities of the state.

He vowed that the Board would not relent in contributing to the actualization of the environmental rejuvenation outcome of the “Realistic Reforms” component of the MORE Agenda of the Oborevwori administration.

Ashibuogwu Juliet, who supervised the weekend’s waste evacuation, decried the poor waste disposal habits of some residents, which included dumping of refuse at unauthorized places, littering of the streets, and throwing out waste items from moving vehicles/Keke, describing the intervention as timely and necessary.

She noted that indiscriminate dumping of waste not only defaced the environment, but also posed serious risks to public health,  urging residents to comply with best waste management practices by engaging registered Private Sector Participants (PSPs) for regular refuse collection from their residential apartments and business premises.
