Residents of Delta State have been urged to embrace responsible environmental practices that will guarantee a safer and healthier society.
The Chairman of the Delta State Waste Management Board, Hon Matthew Mofe Edema, made the call in a message to commemorate the 2025 World Environmental Health Day in the state.
In the message, made available to the press, Hon. Edema emphasized the importance of community participation in safeguarding the environment, noting that this year’s theme, “Clean Air, Healthy People”, underscored the direct link between environmental health and human well-being.
He expressed concern over the growing trend of indiscriminate waste disposal across various communities, warning that such a bad habit not only degraded the environment, but also exposed residents to serious public health risks.
“We must understand that protecting the environment is protecting ourselves. When we dump refuse carelessly, we pollute the air, contaminate water sources, and endanger future generations”, Hon Edema cautioned.
The Waste Management Board Chairman assured that the state government, through the Board, would continue to strengthen collaborations with relevant agencies to guarantee environmental protection and sustainable waste management initiatives.
He further urged Deltans to support the MORE Agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration, which, he said, emphasized environmental sustainability at the heart of its developmental goals.
“Everyone has a role to play. From households to business owners, let us make deliberate efforts to keep our surroundings clean. A healthy environment guarantees a healthy people”, he added.
World Environmental Health Day is observed annually on September 26 to raise global awareness about the critical relationship between human health and the state of the environment.
