The social media space was awash, Tuesday morning, with reports of the demotion of Festus Ohwojero, immediate past Director General of the Delta State Sports Commission, from the position of Executive Assistant to Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Sports.

Though there is no official confirmation, the rumoured punitive measure was said to have been meted out to the appointee following the “below expectation” performance of Team Delta in the just concluded 9th edition of the National Youth Games hosted by the state.

Team Lagos emerged winners of the Games with 52 gold, 32 silver and 26 bronze medals, while Team Delta, which had won the last 8 editions, failed to successfully defend its title and placed second with 37 gold., 38 silver and 39 bronze medals.

The poor outing of Team Delta was allegedly attributed to inadequate funding, late preparation and poor athletes welfare, and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori had, due to the importance attached to the Games, constituted an 8-man Local Organizing Committee headed by Chairman of the State Sports Commission, Mr. Onoriode Oborevwori (Governor’s younger brother) with former Commissioner for Sports, Chief Solomon Ogba as Adviser.

When contacted on the alleged demotion of Ohwojero, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, said he was not aware of it.
