The Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Prof Epiphany Azinge, SAN, OON, has expressed concern about the absence of modern transportation systems in the fast growing capital city of Asaba.

The monarch, who bared his mind while playing host to a delegation of the Task Force arm of the Commercial Motorcycle and Tricycle Operators Association (COMTOA) Delta State, paid him a courtesy visit, said Asaba had been rated the fastest growing state capital in Nigeria without any improvement in the transportation system.

He noted that tricycles, popularly called Keke, had taken over all the internal routes in Asaba, making them the most popular means of transportation in the capital city, and commended the Task Force for bringing sanity to Keke operations in the state by ensuring that the riders conformed to stipulated rules and regulations.

Asagba Prof Azinge, however, challenged the Task Force to go the extra mile to monitor some of the operators whose conducts had aided the commission of crime and the littering of the environment, stressing that while their service to the society was helpful and commendable, they should not impact negatively on the people.

The highly esteemed traditional ruler maintained that it was high time Asaba had modern transportation systems, including Uber, buses, monorail, cable cars and boats, insisting that the government and the private sector had the capacity to change the Keke trajectory to better options.

He disclosed that Asaba people, and indeed residents, would want to see and use different modern transportation systems that would bring the capital city to speed with its fast growing status, pointing out that the community would support any initiative in that regard.

Earlier, the Director General of the Task Force, Chief Uchenna Okafor, said the visit was to pay respect and homage to Asagba Prof Azinge, who, through his actions since ascending the throne, had proven that his unanimous choice as the 14th Asagba of Asaba was not in error.

Chief Okafor, admitted that Asaba had been peaceful and favorable to COMTOA members, assuring the Asagba that they would continue to respect the culture and tradition of the land and remain supportive of the exercise of his sovereign power.
