President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has confirmed the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to a statement by the Presidency, Buhari died on Sunday, at about 4:30 p.m., bringing an end to a period of medical treatment in the United Kingdom.
President Tinubu, who had spoken with the former First Lady, Aishat Buhari, to offer his condolences, directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the UK to accompany the body back to Nigeria.
The statement reads, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the passing of his predecessor, President Muhammadu Buhari.
“President Buhari died today in London at about 4.30 pm, following a prolonged illness.
“President Tinubu has spoken with Mrs Aishat Buhari, the former President’s widow and offered his deep condolences.
“President Tinubu has also ordered Vice President Kashim Shettima to proceed to the United Kingdom to accompany President Muhammadu Buhari’s body back to Nigeria.
“Former President Buhari was twice elected Nigeria’s President in 2015 and 2023.
“He also served as military head of state between January 1984 and August 1985.
“President Tinubu has ordered flags at half-staff as a mark of respect for the departed leader.
A former presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, also confirmed the passing of Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari in a clinic in London.
Buhari death, the news of which was shared via a post on X, marked the end of the life of a leader who served as Nigeria’s President from 2015 to 2023 and previously as military Head of State from 1983 to 1985.
Human Rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, during the 2023 election, Omoyele Sowore, wrote: Buhari died of (BLOOD CANCER) Leukemia.
Reacting, former Aviation Minister, Fani-Kayode, described Buhari as a great and proud son of Nigeria.
Posting on X, he wrote: “A great and proud son of Nigeria has passed on today. May the soul of President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR rest in peace.”
On his part, a former presidential media aide, Reno Omokri, said Buhari’s legacies were worth emulating.
Omokri prayed that God would grant Buhari’s family the fortitude to bear the loss.
“From God we came and to Him we return. My family and I pray that Almighty God grants President Muhammadu Buhari al-Jannah firdaus.
‘May his sins be forgiven, and may As-Sami, (The All-Hearing) grant his family the fortitude to bear their loss.
Ex-Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, prayed for the repose of Buhari.
“President Muhammadu Buhari; May Allah forgive his soul and grant him Aljanna firdausi.Amin.
Inna lillahi wainna Illayhir rajiun”, he posted on X.
