Officials of the Delta State Waste Management Board have intensified their routine waste evacuation exercise along strategic roads, junctions and median strips in the State Capital Territory, even under the rain.
On Friday, they were at the Koka flyover axis, Marian Babangida Way junction and other spots on the ever busy Asaba – Benin expressway, as well as the old dump site to cleared up waste.
The waste evacuation exercise, a directive of the Board Chairman, Hon Matthew Mofe Edema, was part of efforts to ensure that the State Capital Territory remained clean, and that the drains were not blocked to cause flooding.
Mrs Evelyn Orisewezie, who supervised the exercise, said the routine clean up was prompted by the persistent failure of some residents to comply with simple waste management practices.
Mrs Orisewezie commended the Chairman of the Board, Hon Matthew Mofe Edema, for leading the operations of the agency in line with the MORE Agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori by remaining committed to ensuring proper collection and disposal of waste across the state to guarantee a clean, green and healthy environment.
She urged residents and motorists in the state to shun the habit of disposing waste indiscriminately and collaborate with the Board to ensure a well coordinated waste management by engaging the services of Private Sector Participants, (PSPs).
“As a board vested with the responsibility of waste management in Delta State, we are not resting on our oars as regards effective waste management. This is because we are working in line with the MORE Agenda of our amiable Governor, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori to ensure a clean and healthy environment.
“We are also using this opportunity to appeal to residents of the state to engage the services of PSPs for proper waste management rather than disposing waste indiscriminately because anyone caught will face the wrath of the law”, Mrs Orisewezie said.
