The Executive Chairman of the Delta State Waste Management Board, Hon Matthew Mofe Edema, has called on Deltans to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the overall interest of public health.
He made the call when he led staff of the Board and Private Sector Participants, (PSPs), on a sensitization programme to mark this year’s World Environment Day, with a theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution”, highlighting the urgent need to address the devastating impact of plastic pollution on ecosystems, human health, and climate change.
Hon Edema, who was represented by the Director of Operations, Mr. Michael Esegba, explained that indiscriminate dumping of waste had done serious damage to human life, saying that it was time every citizen of Nigeria understood that plastic products were not compatible to human life.
He called on residents of Delta State to register with the PSPs for proper disposal of their waste, saying that plastic products could turn to wealth if collected and sold to recycling companies.
Hon Edema emphasized the need for public involvement in waste management, pointing out that achieving a clean and healthy environment was everybody’s business.
While commending the PSPs for their efforts, the Delta State Waste Management Board Chairman warned that any of them found not to be living up to expectation would be dropped.
Adding his voice to the sensitization programme, the Chairman, Private Sector Participants, (PSPs) Asaba chapter, Comrade Samson Osuere, explained that their work was to evacuate waste and it was the responsibility of residents to package their waste properly for easy evacuation.
He urged residents to always obey the environmental laws in order to live clean and healthy.
The Chapter Chairman, Nigeria Institute of Environmental Engineers, Comrade Johnson Ogana, called on residents to join hands with the relevant agencies in charge of waste management to keep the state clean.
He noted that indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drains, especially plastic materials, was a major cause of flooding and should be stopped.
Comrade Ogana commended the Waste Management Board for participating in the World Environment Day celebration, saying that it helped to sensitize the public on the need to maintain a clean and healthy environment.
