Certified Engineers in the service of the Delta State Government have been told to prioritize quality control and standards in the execution of projects under the supervision of their Ministries, Departments and Agencies.
The Chief of Staff, Government House, Hon Prince Johnson Erijo, made the call when a delegation of the Asaba branch of the Nigerian Society of Engineers paid him a courtesy visit.
He said ensuring that government’s infrastructural projects met specified standards in terms of materials and technical input was crucial to achieving value for money, which Governor Sheriff Oborevwori had remained passionate about.
Hon Erijo noted that some Engineers in the state civil service were known to have compromised standards by certifying poorly executed jobs under their supervision for payment, describing it as unprofessional and unpatriotic.
The Chief of Staff called on the leadership of the Society to put in place an internal mechanism to monitor the professional conduct of members and accordingly discipline those who would be tempted to cut corners at the expense of ethics and standards.
He thanked the Engineers for appreciating the giant strides of the Oborevwori administration in frastructure upgrade and commended them for their technical inputs towards achieving set goals in the construction sector.
Hon Erijo emphasized the need for training and retraining of members of the Society to bring them to speed with evolving global technologies and best practices in their profession, stressing that they needed to update their knowledge of engineering to be able to stay on top of the profession.
Earlier in an address, the Chairman, Nigerian Society of Engineers, Asaba branch, Engr. Ikechukwu Osunde, said the umbrella body for the Engineering profession in Nigeria, was helping members to attain their professional needs through well structured programmes and regular interactions aimed at enhancing high professional standards and ethical practices.
Engr. Osunde stated that they were looking forward to meeting the Governor, whom he described as a leader whose Renewed Hope for More Agenda had already redefined governance and development across Delta, and his leadership resonating across Nigeria with series of awards to show.
The noted that the footprints of the Oborevwori administration were evident across critical sectors — from road infrastructure to health, education to social investment — and more importantly, in the Governor’s strategic support for the engineering profession.
