President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has met with Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuba.

The Governor, who arrived at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, was observed to have come alone, according to reports by our correspondent.

The meeting, which was Governor Oborevwori’s first official with President Tinubu since his defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), is seen as a signal of the APC’s growing consolidation in the South-South region, where it has been making steady gains

On April 23, 2025, Oborevwori made history as the first sitting Delta State Governor to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) since 1999.

Following a closed-door meeting in Asaba, his predecessor, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, members of the State Executive Council, Local Council Chairmen, and grassroots political operatives also declared their allegiance to the APC.

After the Governor’s defection, the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Emomotimi Guwor, has also crossed over to the APC along with 21 members of the House.

Okowa had previously contested as PDP’s Vice-Presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections.

Delta State’s political realignment mirrors recent defections in Rivers and Cross River States, reducing the number of PDP-controlled states to just ten and shaking the foundation of what was once considered an opposition stronghold.

Sources within the APC have revealed that Governors Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Abba Yusuf (Kano), and the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers) are among those expected to defect to the ruling party in the near future.

Meanwhile, continued internal strife and a wave of defections to the APC have plunged the PDP, the Labour Party, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) into deep disarray.
