In keeping with his promise to get involved in the educational development of his Kingdom, the Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Asagba Prof Epiphany Azinge, SAN, OON, on Monday, paid an unscheduled visit to Asagba Mixed Secondary School, Asaba, for an on-the-spot assessment of the teaching and learning environment.

Asagba Prof Azinge was conducted round the classrooms, where he interacted with the students, by the School Principal, Mrs Esther Ajufoh.
The visit afforded the highly esteemed traditional ruler the opportunity to confirm, first hand, what he had been told about the school, especially the over crowded classrooms.

He observed that there were no fewer than ninety students in virtually all the classrooms, which negated the acceptable student-teacher ratio, stressing that the situation was worrisome and needed to be urgently addressed.

The Asagba said over crowded classrooms were not only inimical to effective teaching and learning, but could also encourage students’ involvement in crime and social vices, with the attendant negative impact on the community and the society.

The renowned Professor of Law frowned at the unconducive state of the classrooms, where the students were made to learn under intense heat, but encouraged them to focus on their studies even under the situation they found themselves.

Asagba Prof Azinge admitted that the burden of funding education should not be on government alone, and assured that the Asaba community, under his watch, would assist in finding solutions to some of the challenges of the school, as a way of dignifying the throne after which the institution was named.

The visit of His Royal Majesty to the school underscores the need for communities to always monitor the state of public institutions in their domains to ascertain their challenges and partner with government to find solutions to them in the greater interest of the community concerned.
