As part of efforts to expand the partnership required to enhance the performance of the Delta State Waste Management Board, the Executive Chairman of the Board, Hon. Matthew Mofe Edema, has solicited the collaboration of the Oshimili North Local Government Council in the management of waste in its mandate areas.

Hon Edema, during a visit to the Chairman of Oshimili North Local Government, Hon Chief Innocent Esewezie, said partnership with the Council had become necessary in view of the strategic position of Oshimili North as a part of the State Capital Territory, with the attendant increase in the population of residents in Ibusa, Okpanam, Ugbolu and other neighboring communities.

The Board Chairman noted that this had led to increased generation of waste from homes, markets, hotels, eateries, business premises, among other places, thereby exerting pressure on existing waste disposal facilities.

He drew the attention of the Council Chairman to the seeming intractable problem of indiscriminate dumping of refuse, some residents’ poor sanitary habits and outright disrespect for environmental laws, rules and regulations.

Hon Edema, however, said a lot had been achieved in addressing some of the challenges through aggressive enlightenment campaigns, regular evacuation of waste from strategic road junctions, shoulders and median kerbs within the State Capital Territory, especially the Ibusa and Okpanam axis, including the regular maintenance of the Ibusa dumpsite.

The Executive Chairman accompanied by the member representing Delta North, Hon.  Cosmas Igbenije, said partnership with the Council would further enhance the cleanliness of Ibusa, Okpanam and Ugbolu, among other parts of the LGA

Responding, the Council Chairman, Hon Chief Innocent Esewezie, thanked the Delta State Waste Management Board team for the visit, saying it showed that the establishment was eager to succeed in the huge task of effective waste management.

Chief Esewezie commended the Mofe Edema-led Board for working tirelessly to reduce indiscriminate dumping of refuse and the existence of illegal dumpsites to the barest minimum in the State Capital Territory and pledged the support of the Oshimili North Council in enhancing the cleanliness of Ihe area.

The HPM, HOD Environment, Supervisory Councillor on Environment, the SLG of the Council and the Board’s Director of Operations, Mr. Michael Esegba were present during the visit.
