Conscious of the generation of huge waste associated with Christmas festivities, the Delta State Waste Management Board, on Monday, commenced the pushing back of the Ibusa dumpsite.
The facility, which is being used by over 30 waste managers, serves the State Capital Territory, including Asaba, Okpanam and Ibusa.
The maintenance of the dumpsite, under the supervision of the member representing Delta North on the Board, Mr. Cosmas Igbenije, is to create enough space for the waste managers, also know as Private Sector Participants (PSPs), to empty their truck loads of waste.
Mr. Igbenije told our reporter, who was at the dumpsite to monitor the pushing back, that the exercise was on the directive of the Board Chairman, Hon Matthew Mofe Edema
He said it would be out of place to wait until the facility was filled up and access to it blocked, especially in this festive season when a lot of waste was expected from homes, eateries and hotels, pointing out that the PSPs had been busy carting away refuse from their clients and needed enough dumping space to be able to cope with the pressure
The Delta North member thanked Hon Edema for easing the operations of the PSPs through regular maintenance of dumpsites across the state, stressing that with the support of the Board Chairman, the era of dumpsites not being accessible was gone.
Mr. Igbenije said waste management in the state would receive a boost in the new year under the watch of Hon Edema and called on the PSPs to be prepared to come to speed with the Board, as its commitment to significantly contributing to the success of the MORE agenda of Governor Sheriff’Oborevwori was not negotiable.
In his remarks, the Chairman, Association of Waste Managers, (ASWAMA), Asaba chapter, Mr. Samson Osuere thanked the Board for the proactive measures put in place to make the dumpsite accessible, noting that they had made it possible for the PSPs to continue with the evacuation of refuse from homes and business facilities this Yuletide without hindrance.
