In its averred determination to keep the State Capital Territory clean ahead of the new year, the Delta State Waste Management Board has embarked on the evacuation of refuse dumped at unauthorized places.

The exercise took place on Monday under the supervision of the Operations Department of the Board, with emphasis on the Airport axis, the Benin-Asaba expressway, under the Koka flyover, Okpanam road and Okpanam town.

In a chat with this medium, the Chairman of the Board, Hon Matthew Mofe Edema, said the exercise was in furtherance of the routine evacuation, which had helped the Board to reduce the effect of indiscriminate dumping of refuse.

Hon Edema added that the gateway to the State Capital Territory was given priority due to the heavy influx of people from the Benin axis this festive season, stressing that they must not be allowed to drive through Asaba with a bad impression of the capital city.

He commended the staff of the Asaba field office for their dedication to duty, and particularly thanked the member representing Delta North, Nr. Cosmas Igbenije and the Director of Operations, Mr. Michael Esegba, for the close supervision of the routine clean up.

The Board Chairman appealed to residents of the State Capital Territory, and indeed other urban towns and cities of the state, to imbibe the culture of cleanliness, especially with regards to the proper management of waste.

Hon Edema said though illegal  dumpsites had significantly reduced in Asaba and the environs due to regular evacuation of waste by the Board, a lot still needed to be done to eradicate indiscriminate dumping of refuse by residents.
