The Elders’ Council of:Obotie Community, in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State, has distanced itself from the purported Obotie Community election/swearing-in allegedly conducted on 15th December 2024, by some persons it described as Imposters, impersonators and mischief makers.
The Council, in a statement signed by the Chairman, Pa Simeon Brikinn, Secretary, Mr George Facah and PRO, Pa Joseph Ogholaja, said the said election and swearing-in were not only illegal, mischievous and disdainful, but also entirely a nullity and an affront to the constitution of Obotie Community for the following reasons:
1. By virtue of the Obotie Community Constitution, the Elders Council of Obotie Community has the powers to select/electing, swear-in and issue power of attorney to qualified Obotie Indigenes who have been successfully selected/elected into the various offices of the Obotie Management Community. The Executive Members of Obotie Community Elders Council were not in attendance neither did they give their consent to the conduct of the illegal election/swearing in or any resultant events. The conduct of the 15th December 2024 elections/swearing in is at best a coup, illegal seizure of power from constituted authority and an aberration.
2. Pursuant to various correspondences, especially a letter dated 9th December 2024, that were exchanged between the Elders Council of Obotie Community, the pristine and quintessential Palace of the Olu of Warri Kingdom asking for a shift of the supposed 15th December 2024, election/swearing-in to be slated on the 25th January 2025, hence it is both morally and legally problematic to have conducted an election/swearing-in for various offices of Management Committee and Youth Council of Obotie Community. These further x-rays the lucid and equivocal facts that the persons that conducted the 15th December 2024 election/ swearing-in at Obotie Community were on a frolic of their own, hence such elections/swearing in are considered doomed and must be fizzled into the thin air.
3. Indefinite suspension of Mr. James Abejutuaghan Ogholaja from the Obotie Community Elders Council. After investigation has been conducted, it was discovered that one Mr. Abejutoghan Ogholaja, who is a member (not an Executive Member) of Obotie Community Elders Council, is among the imposters and impersonators that orchestrated and conducted the sham called election/swearing in on 15th December 2024.
4. Conspiracy to undermine, destroy, extinguish the existence of Obotie Community and a deliberate plan to put her in danger. It is a vehement fact that Obotie Community has been in a legal/physical fiasco with our neighboring communities for time immemorial. The Elders Council of Obotie Community considered these ugly situations as an affront to the collective interest of Obotie Community, specifically at a time when there are strong agitations to recognize Obotie as Host Community to Seplat oil and gas limited.
5. Sacrilegious/abominable acts perpetuated on Obotie Community by the mischief and trouble makers. It is an established fact that on 15th December 2024, an illustrious son of Obotie Community, Pa Oritsuwa Eyito, died and his traditional burial rites were being conducted in Obotie Community and the impostors continued their shenanigans by conducting the election/swearing in. It is an established customary law that during the burial rites of an Obotie Community indigene, all activities, including elections are put in abeyance hence it is a sacrilege and an abomination for an election/swearing in to be conducted in Obotie on the same day when traditional burial rites are also held. It is against the background of the above mentioned incontrovertible facts and documented facts that we humbly implore members of the public to ignore the show of shame, disregard for our traditions, illegal acts perpetuated on Obotie Community by these shenanigans and trouble makers
The Council maintained that the persons who emerged from the illegal election/swearing in did not and could not act for Obotie Community as they were products of illegality and were unknown to the Community because due/constitutional process was not followed in electing them.
It stated that it had not issued a power of attorney to any one as the Obotie Community election/swearing in would be conducted on 25th January 2025.
