It has been confirmed that retirees under the obnoxious Contributory Pension Scheme will not benefit from the new minimum wage package
The Delta State Head of Service, Mr. Reginald Bayoko, disclosed this on Sunday during a hangout with Journalists at the Press Centre of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Asaba
Mr. Bayoko said contributions of retirees under the new scheme were fixed and could only be adjusted by the Pension Fund Managers trading with them.
He, however, explained that the case was different for retirees under the old Defined Benefit Scheme, pointing out that the National Salaries and Wages Commission would compute their consequential adjustment, which the State Governor, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, had approved for implementation.
On promotion arrears being paid with the new minimum wage, the HOS maintained that the issue of arrears had been put to rest in the state with the release of N5 5bn by the state government to settle the backlog after which the MDAs were directed to ensure that officers were promoted as and when due
Mr. Bayoko, however, acknowledged the systemic challenges with the promotion of teachers, but assured that the minimum wage would not affect their promotion arrears
He said he had been Head of Service for eight years and still counting, out of his 34 years in service, stressing that he would want to be remembered as someone who would be leaving the state civil service better than he met it and would want to see the service remain at the forefront of optimum service delivery and global best practices
