The Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers, Delta State Council, Chief Francis Arhiyor, has said members of the union are disciplined and responsible individuals contributing to the well-being of the society
Chief Arhiyor, while hanging out with Journalists at the Press Centre of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Asaba on Sunday, said by ensuring the comfort and safety of passengers at the motor parks, road transport Workers were critical stakeholders in nation building.
The NURTW Chairman, who was represented by the Union’s secretary, Comrade Tony Igwebuike, argued that only the passenger who arrived his or her destination safely could be productive and relevant to the society, pointing out that the union had continually insisted on travellers using the parks and not board vehicles along the road for their own safety.
He revealed that the union frowned seriously at the illegal activities of touts who engaged in loading vehicles outside approved motor parks and urged the media to assist in sensitizing the public on the danger of travelling in vehicles that could not be traced to motor parks in the event of a crash or an emergency.
Chief Arhiyor said the union was working on plans to collaborate with the State Ministry of Transport to introduce passengers’ manifests in public motor parks for easy identification of passengers in emergency situations.
He commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for the people – oriented policies and programmes of his administration which had benefitted many, including members of the union, and pledged the support of road transport workers in the state for the state government.
Chief Arhiyor urged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to be more stringent with the enforcement of road traffic law, especially es it concerned overloading, boasting that no sane member of the union could be found culpable of violating the law.
The NURTW helmsman commended the FRSC for its regular road safety campaigns in motor parks, particularly during the EMBER, months, which he noted had helped to reduce road crashes.
Welcoming the guest, the Chairman, Delta State Council of the NUJ, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, underscored the important role.of members of the NURTW in the movement of passengers and goods.
Comrade Oyowe commended the Arhiyor,- led State Council of the union for taking steps to get rid of touts and ensure greater safety of passengers using the parks, while calling on the union to make their fares more affordable in view of the hard times.
