Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Tuesday met with the leaderships of the state chapters of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), and the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE).
The meeting was also attended by the Auditor General (Local Government), Secretary to the State Government (SSG), the Chief of Staff, Government House, Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, the Chairman, Local Government Service Commission and the Accountant-General of the State.
Addressing the meeting, Governor Oborevwori urged the 25 Local Government Councils to implement the new minimum wage for their employees.
He noted that though the Local Government autonomy law came with a burden which the Councils must bear, the implementation of the new minimum wage for their workers was not negotiable and should take effect from November, 2024.
The Governor also admonished the Council Chairmen on the need to comply fully with the extant laws in all their procurements.
Oborevwori advised that a retreat should be organized to enlighten the relevant categories of officials of the Councils on issues concerning financial management which should have the active participation of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).
