The Delta State House of Assembly has pledged to remain focused on enacting laws for the enhancement of the overall well-being of the people
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon Emomotimi Guwor, made the pledge on Wednesday when a delegation of the Delta Online Publishers’ Forum (DOPF) visited him at the Assembly complex, Asaba
Hon Guwor said the Legislature remained the symbol of democracy as it was the only arm of government with elected representatives saddled with the constitutional responsibility of making laws for the peace, order and good governance of the state
He noted that the current State Assembly under his watch had passed a good number of bills, most of which had been assented to by the Governor, pointing out that the House Committee on Legislative Compliance, headed by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon Arthur Akpowowo, had taken steps to ensure compliance with the laws enacted by the House.
The Speaker explained that some of the contemporary challenges affecting the society not covered by law, including housing, transportation and high cost of living, were administrative issues which the Executive arm of government was supposed to deal with.
He commended the media, particularly the Delta Online Publishers’ Forum (DOPF), for being a partner in progress and assured that the cordial relationship between the body and the House would be improved on.
Hon Guwor, who is also the National Treasurer, Conference of Speakers of State Houses of Assembly in Nigeria, said the doors of the Assembly were open to Journalists and urged them to seek clarifications on issues affecting the House before going to press to avoid misinformation and fake news.
The leader of the delegation and Chairman, DOPF, Emmanuel Enebeli, told the Speaker that the Forum comprised of seasoned Journalists who had transitioned into leadership roles as Chief Executive Officers of their respective media organisations.
Enebeli said since inception in 2017, the Forum had remained committed to promoting ethical journalism, fostering strong partnerships with key stakeholders, and contributing meaningfully to the development of Delta State.
He noted that the vigorous legislative activities and robust oversight functions of the State Assembly, as well as the successful symbiotic synergy Guwor’s leadership had engendered with the other arms of government, had helped to firmly entrench the democratic process in the political system, and enhanced the committed, determined and seamless delivery of the Oborevwori administration’s M.O.R.E Agenda and the advancement of Delta State progressively over the past one year.
While expressing confidence that the Speaker’s tenure would bring about continued progress for the state, the DOPF Chairman acknowledged the role played by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, when he was Speaker, noting that his support and encouragement were invaluable, particularly to the Forum’s registration with the CAC, as well as the commencement of its annual lectures, which had become a key platform for dialogue on critical issues in Delta State.
“We are eager to continue to foster a strong relationship with your leadership, just as we did with Oborevwori.
“Mr. Speaker, the DOPF has closely monitored the activities of the Delta State House of Assembly under your leadership, and we are pleased with the significant strides made so far. Your focus on security, particularly addressing the persistent clashes between farmers and herders, has been both timely and commendable. We are aware of how these conflicts have severely impacted farming activities and contributed to food insecurity in parts of the state”, Enebeli stated
