REPS COMMITTEE ADVOCATES STRONGER NIGERIA/SOUTH KOREA BILATERAL COOPERATION

The House of Representatives has pledged to positively impact the lives of Nigerians through progressive partnerships and bilateral cooperation.

The House Committee on Nigeria/South Korea Parliamentary Friendship Group made the pledge when it met with the newly appointed South Korea’s Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Pankyu Kim. 

In his opening remarks, the Committee’s Chairman, Rt. Hon. Nnamdi Ezechi, welcomed the new Ambassador and informed  him that the National Assembly was committed to straightening bilateral relations between Nigeria and foreign countries through legislative support.

Hon Ezechi assured Ambassador Kim of the hospitality of Nigeria and highlighted the mandate of the Committee, as created by the Speaker, Rt. Hon (Dr.) Tajudeen Abbas, to be the fostering of collaboration and strengthening of friendship between Nigeria and South Korea, especially in areas of mutual interest and benefit.

He said the Committee would continue to support policies and programmes that would promote cooperation between both countries for the greater good of the citizens.

In his contribution, a member of the Committee, Hon. Paul Ekpo, underscored the need to build on the foundation laid by Kim’s predecessor through deepening collaboration in technology, agriculture and youth empowerment.

Also speaking, Hon. (Engr.) Fom Dalyop called for increased technology transfer initiatives, pointing out Nigeria’s position as the largest market in Africa and the opportunities this presents for both countries. 

For his part, Hon. (Dr.) Midala Usman Balami highlighted the need for health interventions, agricultural advancements, and the development of skills for the economically disadvantaged Nigerian youths. 

Responding, Ambassador Pankyu Kim expressed his pleasure in meeting the members of the Nigeria/South Korea Parliamentary Friendship Group and emphasized the strong interest of numerous Korean industries in Nigeria. 

He announced the establishment of a South Korean/Nigeria Parliamentary Group in the South Korean parliament, which aimed at fostering a partnership between the parliaments of both nations and assured the Committee of South Korea’s continued support for and cooperation with Nigeria.
