A former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Victor Onyekachi Ochei, has bagged an award for selfless service to humanity.

The award was presented to him at the installation of Barr Smart Edoge as the 15th President of the Rotary Club of Asaba, Government House.

The former Speaker, who chaired the event, said the only legacy any good leader could bequeath to society was selfless service for which he or she would be remembered in and out of office.

Ochei, who would for long be remembered for changing the face of the State Assembly complex when he was Speaker, said what mattered most was not how much money a leader made while in office, but impacting positively on wherever he or she served and living the place better off.

He said he was not used to accepting awards, especially from organisations that used the offers to seek relevance or financial gains,  but that he agreed to that of the Rotary Club because it was for selfless service, which he believed in.

The former Speaker emphasized that recognition or award should be earned, even from organisations not known to the awardee, through hard work and selflessness, and advised those who undeservedly craved to be recognized to desist.

He congratulated Barr Smart Edoge on his installation as the 15th President of the Rotary Club of Asaba, Government House, and pledged to bank roll the Club’s Basic Education and Literacy programme, as his contribution to the success of the new President’s one-year tenure.
