The Chairman of Ika South Local Government, Engr. Jerry Ehiwarior, has called for collaboration between the Local Government and the Delta State Oil Producing Development Commission, (DESOPADEC)
Ehiwarior made the call when the Commissioner representing the Ika Ethnic Nationality in DESOPADEC, Hon. Cordllia Anyagwu, visited him in his office at Agbor.
The Council Chairman, while appreciating the interventionist role of the Commission, said it was imperative that areas of collaboration were effectively harnessed for the development of Ika Nation.
He noted that the presence of DESOPADEC was evident in Ika Nation, and commended the Commission’s efforts at ensuring that the people of Ika were factored in its development agenda. “I must say that DESOPADEC is doing well”, he added.
Ehiwarior emphasised the need for the Commission to compliment the efforts of the Council in tackling the menace of indiscriminate dumping of refuse, especially in the drainage channels, stressing that the attitude had contributed to the uncleanliness of some parts of the Local Government Area.
He said the Council had put measures in place to sanction those who littered the environment, revealing that Committees had been set up to enforce the law.
Earlier, the DESOPADEC Commissioner, Hon. Cordelia Anyagwu, disclosed that the Commission was already carrying out palliative work in some erosion-prone areas, as well as opening blocked drains in some parts of Ika South, including Obi Ikenchuku road in Agbor.
Hon Anyagwu solicited the assistance of the Local Government in opening up discharge points which had been blocked by silt and grasses for the free flow of flood water.
She also appealed for support in the area of enlightenment, as that would go a long way in reducing the penchant of the people to drop refuse indiscriminately.
The DESOPADEC Commissioner appreciated the Council Chairman for giving speedy approval to the request for land to build the secretariat of the Commission in Ika South, pointing out that having a place of operation would enhance the Commission’s efficiency in carrying out its mandate.
