Amid the high cost of fueling power generating sets and the environmentally hazardous carbon emissions associated with them, the Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe, Oghara, has recorded a technological milestone in the production of power generating plant
The plant is said to have the capacity to supply electricity for up to 21 hours at a stretch without fuel or gas.
The Rector of the Polytechnic, Prof Emmanuel Biri, who disclosed this while hanging out with members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ) Delta State Council, on Sunday in Asaba, said the generator was designed to operate with certain symbiotic mechanisms.
Prof Biri said the equipment, which took about two years to put together, had been informally showcased when it was presentated to the State Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof Tonukare and would soon be officially presented to the State Governor, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, when duly certified by the relevant authorities.
The Rector noted that the power generating plant, which he explained was a prototype of 2.5kva, would not just be an invention of the Polytechnic, but a product of Delta State and by extension Nigeria
He said the symbiotic mechanisms used to power the generator would remain a top secret to the institution to save the technology from being stolen, pointing out that the Polytechnic had the capacity to mass produce the sound proof plant.
Prof Biri thanked Delta NUJ for the privilege given him to showcase the achievements of his institution to the world through the media and solicited a more robust collaboration with the Union in advancing academics and research in the Polytechnic.
Earlier, the Chairman, Delta State Council of the NUJ, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, said the parley to party hangout was conceived to afford key players in the public and private sectors the opportunity to showcase their activities and achievements using the various media platforms in the state
Comrade Oyowe commended Prof Biri for leading the Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe, Oghara, to produce a power generating set not run with fuel, describing it as a major breakthrough in the technological advancement of the country worthy of emulation.
