The Direct Labour Agency, charged with the mandate of  maintaining roads within Delta State, has urged community leaders and traditional rulers to take ownership of and protect government facilities in their localities.

The Director General of the Agency, Engr. Emmanuel lghomena, who made the call in Asaba while briefing Journalists, noted that the public’s attitude towards safeguarding government property was not encouraging.

Engr. Ighomena said Board members of the Agency recently visited the three Asphalt plants and operation zones of the establishment in Agbor, Oghara and Ughelli,  only to discover that all the equipment were dilapidated and some vandalized.

While saying that the host communities would have shown some level of commitment to securing the facilities, the DLA DG disclosed that it would cost about N130m to put the plants back to use.

He, however, revealed that the State Governor, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, had graciously approved funds to the fixing of the plants, pointing out that repair works had started.

Engr. Ighomena added that approvals had also been given for the construction of a Central Equipment Maintenance and Repair Workshop, construction of a Modern Central Laboratory for testing soil, laterite, asphalt and concrete for road construction and replacement of old furnitures and office equipment at the Agency’s headquarter in Asaba.

According to the DG, with the repositioning of the Agency by the Governor, the maintenance of failed roads across the state would soon receive and boost.
