The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has warned local government chairmen and councillors across the country against diverting public funds.
Fagbemi, who gave the warning in Abuja against the backdrop of the recent financial autonomy granted the 774 local governments in the country by the Supreme Court, said anyone found wanting would be arrested and prosecuted.
He observed that Local Government Chairmen might be tempted to divert the funds amid state pressure, saying: “Well, we have a situation on our hands, I know that it is still there; the conduct of elections is to be undertaken by the states.
“However, don’t forget that the Governors have immunity, but the Local Government Chairmen or Councillors have no immunity, so they have to choose between dealing with the funds of their Council’s as they like and risking to face the wrath of the law and possibly going to jail”.
