Thursday’s disruption of the process of electing the leadership of the Legislative Arm of Aniocha South Local Government Council has been blamed on undue interference by some political leaders in the area
Reacting to the development, the Council Chairman, Pastor Jude Chukwunwike, said a meeting, with party leaders and representatives of security agencies in attendance, was held prior to the inauguration of the Legislative Arm, where it was agreed that the status quo should be maintained to ensure a seamless process of electing the leader of the House
Pastor Chukwunwike explained that the position of Secretary to the Local Government was retained by ward 3, while the leadership of the House was micro-zoned to ward 2 with two Councillors.
The Chairman revealed that the process was going on smoothly until some political leaders, who had lost out in their bids to produce the Chairman or Commissioner, attempted to change the goal post in the middle of the game by calling their boys to truncate the process, which was vehemently resisted.
He noted that there was always a pre-selection process in all Legislative Houses and the case of Aniocha South should not be different, more so when the party had agreed that the zoning formula be maintained.
Pastor Chukwunwike said the elections had come and gone, giving way to governance, and urged the aggrieved party leaders not to try to influence some of the gullible Councillors who had come to learn and contribute meaningfully to the system.
The Council Chairman, however, expressed delight that even in the midst of the confusion, the House successfully elected its Leader in the person of Hon Leo Nzemeke.
