The House of Representatives has taken the first reading of a bill for an Act to establish the National Agricultural Machinery Supply and Management Agency, Ushie, in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State.
The bill, marked HB 1211, sponsored by the member representing the Ndokwa/Ukwuani Federal Constituency, Hon Nnamdi Ezechi, was presented to the House at Tuesday’s plenary.
It seeks to establish an agency responsible for coordinating the supply, provision, and management of agricultural machinery and equipment to enhance agricultural production in Nigeria.
The proposed agency’s functions will include importing and procuring agricultural machinery and equipment from certified indigenous manufacturers, institutions, and agencies.
Additionally, the agency will collaborate with the National Centre for Agricultural Mechanization to achieve increased agricultural production nationwide.
Other functions included in the bill are the maintenance and repair of agricultural machinery, training and capacity building for farmers and operators, and promoting research and development in agricultural mechanization.
The bill provides for the headquarters of the agency to be located in Ushie, Ndokwa East Local Government of Delta State, with a zonal office in each of the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria.
