The newly inaugurated Local Government Chairmen in Delta State have been urged to focus on the development of sports at the grassroots as they assume duty in their respective Councils
An ex-center back defence strongman of the national team, Sam Sodje, made the call in a congratulatory message to the 25 Council Chairmen.
The ex-international noted that experience had shown that past local government administrations in the state did not do well in promoting grassroots sports, which remained a platform for discovering talented sports men and women young
Sodje advocated partnership between the Councils and the state government, through the Delta State Sports Commission, in the sponsorship of local athletics and football competitions, as well as collaborating with the primary and secondary schools in their areas to organize inter-house sports competitions
The ex-international added that the Council Chairmen were now in a better position to sponsor and finance comprehensive sports competitions with their new found wealth resulting from the newly approved financial autonomy.
The former legendary footballer said the services of retired talented sports men and women could be useful to the Councils in that regard, stressing that sports deserved to be promoted at all levels in view of the numerous benefits to those engaged in it and the society at large.
