The Pointer Newspaper, published by the Delta Printing and Publishing Company Limited, DPPCL is back to the digital space with the unveiling, on Friday, of its rebranded online platform with the link: thepointersnewsonline.com
The Majority Leader of the Delta State House of Assembly and Chairman, House Committee on Information, Hon Emeka Nwaobi, who performed the ceremony, said it was rightly in response to the present day digital age.
Hon Nwaobi noted that The Pointer Newspaper had undergone appreciable reforms, with a significant improvement in content, readership and circulation, expressing optimism that the state-owned newspaper would, in no distant time, become the most read in the country.
He commended the Board, management and staff of the media organisation for keeping pace with the present day demands of the industry, which had given the newspaper an edge in the highly competitive publishing business.
The Majority Leader pledged the support of the House Committee on Information for the Delta Printing and Publishing Company, pointing out that the Committee was happy with the progress The Pointer had made over the years.
The Chairman, Board of Directors, Delta Printing and Publishing Company, Dr Ebenezer Okorodudu, while speaking on the successes the Board had led the Company to achieve, said The Pointer had not only become a household newspaper, but was also currently being circulated to the 25 Local Government Areas of the state with plans to get all the MDAs in the state to subscribe to the newspaper.
While adding that over 30,000 copies of the newspaper were being printed daily, as against 16, 000 before the Board came in, Dr Okorodudu commended the current and past General Managers of the media house for their efforts to make the newspaper a must read, saying that the rebranded online platform would further take The Pointer to greater heights.
In his welcome address, the Acting General Manager of DPPCL, Mr Godfrey Ubaka, said the rebranding of the online platform was to meet global standards in a highly competitive industry, describing the unveiling as a significant milestone in taking the newspaper to the global community.
Ubaka said The Pointer online platform was unique, as it would be a reference point for ethics, professionalism and truth, which were lacking in most online media outfits.
In his goodwill message, a columnist of the newspaper, renowned environmentalist and founder of the Mandela Garden, Chief Newton Jibunor said he was happy to be associated with The Pointer because of the great strides it had made in recent times, and urged the organisation to leverage on the online platform to gain more grounds in the media space.
Speaking on behalf of the College of General Managers of the Company, Mr Monday Uwagwu, noted that the state-owned media houses could compete favourably with the best in the industry across the country, but sadly lacked government attention.
He said it was not a good narrative that over three decades after the state was created The Pointer had yet to move to its permanent site.
The event was attended by the State Commissioner for Information, Dr Ifeanyi Osuoza, represented by the Functioning Permanent Secretary, Mrs Theresa Oliko, a Director in the Ministry, Mr. Harold Orji, two former General Managers of the Company, Bosah Iwobi and Sam Ijeh, among others.
