Delta State House of Assembly has said it will continue to Involve stakeholders in the law making process to ensure that only laws that will stand the test of time are enacted by the Assembly.

The Chairman, House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon Chukwudi Dafe, stated this during the Committee’s joint public hearing with the House Committee on Environment, Oil and Gas, on the Delta State Structure for Signage and Advertising Agency Law, 2015 (Amendment) Bill.

Hon Dafe, a former Chairman of Ukwuani Local Government and member representing the Ukwuani Constituency in the House, noted that laws made for the people could only be effective if their inputs were incorporated in the enactment of such laws, hence the public hearing.

He said the Delta State Structure for Signage and Advertisement Agency Law needed to be updated, just like other laws, to bring them to line with present day realities and urged stakeholders present at the public hearing to make meaningful contributions to the process of amending the Bill.

The Committee Chairman thanked all who had sent in memoranda and assured them that their proposals would be taking into consideration, where necessary.

In an interview with newsmen after the public hearing session, the Chairman, House Committee on Environment, Oil and Gas, Hon Festus Utuama, said the amendment being sought was to streamline the provisions of the existing law and sanitise outdoor advertising in the state.

Hon Utuama expressed satisfaction with the submissions of the stakeholders, describing the public hearing as largely inclusive and painstaking.

For his part, the President, College of HPMs and Treasures of Local Governments in Delta State, Mr Austin Emaduku, said the proposed amendment was to effectively regulate outdoor advertising in the state, stressing that the clustering of billboards at strategic junctions and locations across the state defaced rather than beautify the environment.
