Preparatory to the July 13, 2024, Local Government elections in Delta State, the State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC), on Tuesday (today) commenced the verification/screening of candidates for the elections.
Eleven political parties would be jostling for Chairmanship, Vice Chairmanship and Councillorship positions across the 500 Electoral Wards in the 25 LGAs of the state.
They are Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Action Alliance (AA), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC), New Nigeria People Party (NNPP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Accord Part (A), Labour Party (LP), Action Democratic Party (ADP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and African Action Congressman (AAC).
Addressing the candidates at the Commission’s headquarters in Asaba, DSIEC Chairman, Sir Raphael Jerry Agbaike, solicited their cooperation as the exercise, billed to last for three days, was aimed at ensuring that documents submitted in DSIEC Form 002 were genuine.
Sir Agbaike said officials of the Commission would, during the exercise, sight the original copies of the documents submitted.
Speaking further, the Chairman of the Screening Committee and Commissioner in charge of Operations Department, Hon. (Engr.) James Umukoro, reaffirmed the apolitical status of DSIEC and assured the candidates that the process would be simple and seamless.
Those successfully screened today were candidates from Aniocha North, Aniocha South, Ndokwa East, Isoko North, Bomadi, Warri North, Ethiope East, Udu and Ethiope West LGAs.
Tomorrow, Wednesday candidates from Ndokwa West, Oshimili North, Oshimili South, Isoko South, Patani, Warri South, Ughelli North, Uvwie and Sapele LGAs will be screened while Thursday is set aside for candidates from Ika North East, Ika South, Ukwuani, Burutu, Warri South-West, Okpe, and Ughelli South LGAs
