The media space has been awash with several reports about attacks on members and perceived associates of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) by the Nigerian government in a bid to checkmating the activities and influence of the group in the country.

While members of the group  generally claim that they are law abiding and peaceful in championing their cause, in line with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,  some persons will readily disagree with this notion, describing IPOB actions as oppressive.

This is the sad experience of one Mr. Francis Somtochukwu Okonkwo, a native of Nnewi in Nnewi North LGA of Anambra State, who resides at New Haven metropolis of Enugu in Enugu State, Nigeria.

Narrating his ordeal to our reporter through telephone conversation, Mr. Francis Somtochukwu Okonkwo said the Police and IPOB members were after his life because of his closeness and association to a well known member of IPOB.

“On 28th February 2023, a friend of mine was apprehended by the Nigeria Police who was a member of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

“The Police came looking for me at my apartment as they thought I was one of the IPOB members since I was always seen around my friend Chuka.

“Luckily for me, I was not at home, but the rest of the IPOB members who knew me thought I was the one who had given the Police information about their whereabout and came looking for me.

“When they got to my house on the 1st of March 2023, I had fled because of threats to my life, but they burnt my car because I was not at home.

“On 6th of March they saw me at New Haven area and took me away to a forest and tortured me alleging that I was the one who gave the police information about them,  threatening to kill me and my family,

“I was lucky that some hunters heard noises from afar and began to shoot, which made them to abandon me and fled, thinking that the police had come after them”, he narrated.

Mr. Francis Okonkwo, therefore, urged the international community to come to the aid of thousands of innocent Nigerians languishing in prisons, harassed and tortured for crimes they knew nothing about.
