The Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Thursday, inspected the drainage projects around the Warri City Stadium, awarded to Levant Construction Company.
The projects include the de-silting and clearing of blocked waterways, and the construction of new ones in order to solve the perennial flooding problem in and around the Warri City Stadium.
The Governor was conducted round the project sites by the Director General of the Warri, Uvwie and Environs Special Area Develionent Agency, WUEDA, Prince Godwin Ejinyere and his team of civil engineers.
He inspected the culvert and canal at Stadium road, and the Bowen Avenue – Ogbe-Ijoh Market – Warri River canal in Warri Township, and discovered that Levant Construction Company had started de-silting the blocked canal to allow free flow of water.
Rt. Hon. Oborevwori, accompanied by top government functionaries, was not happy with the reckless manner residents dumped refuse into the canals, preventing flood water from flowing freely into the river.
After listening to the consultant, JEFCON and Associates, the Contractor, Levant, and the DG of WUEDA, Prince Godwin Ejinyere on the extent of work done so far, the Governor commended Levant Construction Company for the speed at which the job was being executed, and gave kudos to WUEDA for supervising the projects thoroughly and technically.
Rt. Hon. Oborevwori said the state government would soon award the contract for the rehabilitation of the Warri City Stadium, hence the need to open up all blocked waterways to de-flood the Stadium and its environs.
He said all structures built on canal right-of-way would be removed to allow free flow of water in the drains and wondered why people would dump refuse to block the drains and turn around to complain about the devastating impacts of flood in their areas.
The inspection visit by the Governor attracted praises from residents of the area, especially traders at Ogbe-Ijoh and Macaiver markets, who thanked him for his MORE Agenda in and around the Oil City.
