The motion was moved under matters of urgent public importance at Wednesday’s plenary by the member representing the Ndokwa/Ukwuani Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon Nnamdi Ezechi, seconded by Hon Mohammadu Shehu from Kano state.

The House specifically asked the Ecological Project Office to do the needful on the situation before the next rainy season, and urged collaboration between the Federal Ministries of Environment and Niger Delta Affairs in addressing the erosion menace through the dredging of the River Niger and the sand filling of the affected communities.

Such measures, the Green Chambers maintained, would mitigate environmental degradation, loss of life and property, and promote sustainable development in the communities and by extension the Niger Delta region.

The House directed its Committees on Environment, Niger Delta Affairs and Ecological Fund to ensure strict compliance with the resolutions in order to protect the means of livelihood and well-being of dwellers of the communities.

In his presentation, Hon. Ezechi passionately advocated urgent action to address the existential threat posed by perennial erosion along the banks of the River Niger in Ndokwa East Local Government Area.

Highlighting the ugly situation faced by communities such as Abala-osumili, Utchi, Okpai, Abalagada, Aboh, Adai-Obiaka, Utuokwu, Umuolu, and Onyia, the Lawmaker underscored the urgent need for intervention to avert further devastation and safeguard the vulnerable populations.
