The State Government has reiterated its determination to restore the lost glory of public schools in the state.
The Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Hon Samuel Mariere, stated this during his visit to some schools in Asaba to monitor the resumption of pupils and students for the second term of the 2023/2024 academic session.
Honourable Mariere enjoined parents to bring back their children and wards to public schools to give them quality education, saying that the Board was out to restore confidence in public schools.
He revealed that funds had been provided by the state government and Universal Basic Education Board to ensure the training and retraining of teachers in the state to enable them impart knowledge to students and promote academic excellence.
The SUBEB Chairman stated that part of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE agenda was to get public schools in the state delivering quality education as was the case in the past so that parents could confidently enrol their children and wards in such schools
The former Legislator charged parents to live up to their responsibility of sending their children and wards in school, saying that it was a criminal offence for any parent not to so do.
He noted that the public schools had more qualified teachers who were ready to impart knowledge to the pupils and students, pointing out that the Board would sanction any teacher not willing to perform his or her duties.
At the Government Primary School, GRA, the Head Teacher, Deacon Emma Okakwu, expressed delight with the visit, saying it would spur them to work hard.
Some of the schools visited including Government Primary School, GRA, Uzo igwe Primary School and Asagba Primary School, all witnessed low turn out of pupils.
On the entourage of the Chairman were the Permanent Secretary, SUBEB, Mr Bryon Unini, Director Quality Assurance, Demes Omoniyi and Dr Samuel Ayuwe.
