The prevailing harsh economy of the country has compelled the management of the University of Calabar to increase its tuition fees for undergraduates by over 100 percent.
According to a statement by the institution’s spokesperson, Mr Effiong Eyo, the increment was approved by the University’s Senate at an emergency meeting on Friday, and would take effect from the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 academic sessions.
By this development, fresh students for non-science courses are to pay a total of N147,500 as against N64,050, returning students N113,000 as against N49,500, while final year students are to pay N135,500 as against N52,050.
Similarly, fresh science students are now to pay N193,500, returning students N146,500 and final year students N169,500.
The statement explained that the measure was also to enable the institution to maintain its known academic standards.
Meanwhile, the students of the University have staged a protest against the hike in tuition fees.
The protesters, numbering over 100 blocked some major roads leading to the institution, including Mary Slessor and Etta Agbor roads, and prevented workers from reporting for duty.
The students vowed to continue the protest until the increment was reversed.
