The two-day free medical outreach at the instance of the wife of the Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Mrs Timiebi Guwor, in Warri South West Constituency, has kicked off with hundreds of people with different health conditions thronging the various centers across the local government area to have their health needs attended to.
Mrs Guwor, at the flag off of the programme put together to commemorate her 40th birth anniversary, announced an extension of the exercise to Warri South and Warri North local government areas in order to reach out to more people with similar needs in the Warri Federal Constituency.
The flag off ceremony held at Ogbe-Ijoh, headquarters of Warri South West local government area, had in attendance top government functionaries, including the wife of the State Governor, Mrs Tobore Oborevrwori, Civil Commissioners, the Chairman of Warri South West, Taiye Tuoyo, some wives of the State Legislators, community and opinion leaders, among others.
The auditorium and surrounding premises of Ogbe-Ijoh community Town Hall, venue of the flag off, were filled to capacity, including nursing mothers and pregnant women, as health personnels engaged for the exercise took time to attend to the patients.
Mrs Guwor, flanked by her husband, Rt Hon Emomotimi Guwor, said the gesture was in appreciation of God’s grace upon her and family, pointing out that there was no better way to thank God than impacting on the lives of others.
Stressing that “health is wealth”, the Speaker’s wife expressed optimism that the free medical programme would provide some reliefs to the patients, even as she restated her preparedness to continue to support efforts geared towards enhancing the quality of life of the people.
The wife of the Governor, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, represented by the wife of the Deputy Governor, Ezinne Catherine Onyeme, commended Mrs Guwor for providing access to good health, saying that the gesture was in line with her “You Matter” Foundation and the MORE agenda of her husband, Sheriff Oborevwori.
The Governor’s wife stated that creating the enabling environment for sustainable development was a priority for the state government, emphasizing that any form of support in that regard would always be appreciated.
Health Commissioner, Dr Joseph Onojaeme, who also commended Mrs Guwor for floating the free health programme to mark her 40th birthday, restated government’s commitment to meeting the healthcare needs of Deltans.
The elated husband of the celebrant and Speaker of the Delta State Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor, appreciated his wife for being such a wonderful partner, a development which he said had kept the family on the steady path of progress.
Guwor explained that on daily basis, people kept seeking assistance for their health challenges, hence the decision not to celebrate his wife’s 40th birth anniversary with the usual funfair, but instead channel the resources to providing support for those with health challenges.
He disclosed that sixty health workers were engaged for the free medical outreach, explaining that diagnosed conditions that could be treated at the centers would be promptly attended to, while more serious ones would be referred to the Warri Central Hospital or the Delta State Teaching Hospital, Oghara.
Saying that the free medical exercise was not political nor discriminatory, the Speaker announced enrollment of two thousand constituents into the Delta State Contributory Health Insurance Scheme to further boost the health of the people.
According to the Speaker, fourteen million naira would be spent on the enrollment of the two thousand persons into the scheme at seven thousand naira per enrollee, pointing out that the beneficiaries would be drawn from across the ten wards in the Constituency.
Guwor pledged to continue to give back to the society, particularly to the people of Warri South West local government area who gave him the mandate to represent them in the State Assembly, which led to his emergence as Speaker, as well as National Treasurer, Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria.
The Chairman of Warri South West local government ,Taiye Tuoyo and others who spoke, including some beneficiaries, expressed profound gratitude to the Speaker and his wife for dedicating the birth anniversary to the service of God and humanity.
Areas covered included laboratory tests and screening for different health conditions, out patient consultations and management, surgeries, ante-natal, and Vital Signs Monitoring, among others.
