Delta State Government yesterday matched words with action to end the era of impunity among contractors who attempt to sabotage the vision of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in delivering quality road projects.
To this end, the Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, has directed the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) to address a failed discharge portion of the Kwakagbor community road project in Asaba after discovering that the previous contractor could not effectively handle the job.
Shortly after inspecting the project, the Works Commissioner queried the contractor for encroaching onto the Asaba/Ughelli highway without proper clearance from the Highways Department, stressing the importance of every project to the Governor.
According to Comrade Izeze ‘’let me make this unambiguously clear: the era of impunity is gone; it is gone for good. The covenant of Governor Oborevwori with the people of Delta State is MORE. It is a covenant that he made before God and Deltans and that covenant must be fulfilled’’.
Consequently, he directed the relevant Directors in the Ministry to interface with CCECC to remedy the anomaly, stressing that “everything that this government pays for, we must extract value for money irrespective of whose ox is gored.
‘’The era of impunity is gone. There is law and order now. We cannot descend to the Frankenstein era; it will not happen. We are all created equal before God and everybody is equal before the law. There is no special citizen and if you (the contractor) have such a notion, it is a fallacious misrepresentation. There is a new Sheriff in town’’ he said.
Addressing Journalists on the sides, the Director of Urban Roads, Engr Solomon Akpotohwo, explained that the contractor did not seek the Ministry’s consent before going to the site to tamper with an already finished project.
He said the Commissioner had also affirmed that they (contractor) did not have the capacity and had revoked the affected portion of the project, so that water could effectively be discharged from the community.
“The affected portion is on a 165m length of drain on the Asaba/Ughelli expressway that should connect with the Kwekagbor road project (opposite Summit Junction) to enable water discharge on that corridor.
Recall that Governor Oborevwori had promised to leave enduring legacies for Deltans as encapsulated in his MORE Agenda; Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms and Enhance peace and security .
