The Warri Area Command of the Nigerian Police Force has been urged to support the Warri, Uvwie and Environs Special Area Development Agency, (WUEDA) towards ensuring strict compliance with environmental laws in the City, in line with its mandate.

The Director-General of the Agency, Hon. Prince Godwin Ejinyere, made the call in Warri on Monday when he led the operational and management staff of WUEDA on a courtesy visit to the Warri Area Commander, ACP Bashir Abubakar.

Prince Ejinyere said the visit was to intimate the Area Commander with the policy direction of government for the Oil City, as well as the activities and programmes of WUEDA towards achieving set goals and objectives and to solicit the support of the Police in enforcing the relevant environmental laws.

The former Okpe Council Chairman said the interest of the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori was not just to restore the lost glory of the Oil City of Warri, Uvwie and the environs, but also to improve on it.

He commended his predecessor for his efforts at giving the Oil City the desired facelift and promised to build on the achievements so far recorded by the Agency.

“Thank God the Governor hails from this part of the State and he is very desirous to see that Warri, Uvwie metropolis is given the long awaited facelift; the entire area is defaced due to indiscriminate dumping of refuse, blocking the drains which has led to flooding over the years. So we are partnering with the Police to reduce insecurity occasioned by the rising spate of crime, social vices, violence and extortion of residents by unscrupulous elements in the Oil City”, the DG asserted.

He informed the Warri Area Commander that WUEDA’s jingles were already on air to sensitize the public on what the Agency was set up to achieve, and also to let the people know and understand that it would no longer be business as usual, as there would be appropriate sanctions to ensure total compliance.

The Duke of Orerokpe District emphasized that the Police and the Agency needed to collaborate to ensure the actualization of the MORE Agenda of the Oborevwori administration.

Prince Ejinyere said the Agency was established by the Delta State Government with the mandate to comprehensively develop Warri, Effurun and the Environs to make the City a beauty to behold.

While commending the State Governor, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, for his strong desire to develop Warri, Uvwie twin cities, he said the Agency had the mandate to develop, clean up and beautify the City; stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains to prevent flooding; stop illegal motor and keke parks for easy flow of traffic; sanitize market places, and partner with the Police to ensure orderliness in the metropolis.

The DG said WUEDA had mounted an aggressive campaign on radio and television to sensitize residents on the new order that required them to do the right thing or face the wrath of the law of found wanting.

He said having reached out to the traditional rulers and Local Government Chairmen, it was necessary to seek the support of the Police for best results ,hence the visit to the Area Command.

In his remarks, the Area Commander, ACP Bashir Abubakar, noted that it was the first time a large number of management and operational staff of a government agency ever visited him in his office, and thanked the DG and his entourage for the visit.

ACP Abubakar commended Governor Oborevwori for directing efforts at restoring the lost glory of the Oil City of Warri by awarding and executing several projects in the City, citing the ongoing drainage projects as vivid examples of the state government’s efforts at rebuilding the Oil City.

He appreciated the Director-General for educating him on the tasks and set targets of the Agency, pointing out that the Police had been doing their utmost best to provide security and ensure law and order in the City.

The Area Commander assured WUEDA of the needed support and urged the Agency to always reach out to the Area Command whenever Police assistance was needed.

In another development, Hon. Ejinyere visited the site of the storm water drainage project being handled by Levant Construction Ltd at Upper Erejuwa road, by Okere road Warri, same day, to ascertain the level of work done so far.

The WUEDA DG said the inspection re-visit was to ensure that the project was on course so that it could be completed and delivered in record time.

In his desire to ensure uninterrupted execution of government projects Prince Ejinyere said he would dialogue with aggrieved persons on the way forward on issues of land encroachment, so that the contractor could complete the project next month as scheduled.

The Agency’s Director of Administration and Finance, Mr. Simon Esi; the Director of Projects, Engr. Bemigho Ofoeyeno; and the Director of Investment, Mr. Kingdom Apih; were among the WUEDA staff that accompanied Hon. Ejinyere on the visits.
